FADING MEMORIES

Fading memories (2022) is a personal body of work about Alena’s family home in Ivanovka, a small village in Donbas, Eastern Ukraine, that has become a military base. Alena developed a unique process that involved scraping rust flakes from abandoned objects found across Edinburgh and scattering them onto screenprinted images from her time at home. The rust stuck to the clear acrylic medium, bringing the photos to life. The body of work is fragile and the prints will disintegrate with time, exactly the way Alena wants her pain to fade away…

The prints were showcased first time as a part of the Printmaking End of Year Show at Leith School of Art in June 2022. Selected prints were then exhibited as a part of the public art show Consequences. Art and Activism in the Nuclear Age at the Out of the Blue Drill Hall, Edinburgh in August 2022.
